That’s right , it doesn’t matter how you look, dress, where you work, whether you are rich or poor. You only have one quality that is important to them….a good voice that can carry a tune on pitch singing the correct notes, words, vowels and breath control to a song. And of course learn the song, which is many times learned from sheet music and listening to the part sung. You don’t have to know how to read music. If you can sing in church, you can do barbershop too. Stand beside someone sing you part and follow along.
Not so perfect a singer, you can still make it into a chorus with others. If you are good at solo singing, a quartet may work even better for you as you have three others to support your sound and make the song more entertaining. There are four of you, each singing a different part to sell the song. No musical instruments needed. All these three guys care about is if you can sing the part they are missing. The chorus just wants all four parts and more singers.
What are the parts? Lead has the melody, the tenor sings above it, the bass is below the lead and the bari fills in the needed chord. That’s it and it’s called barbershop.
When you all sing it right you create a fifth note called a barbershop seventh where the chord rings and produces added energy. You just sing it over and over until you have it where it rings best. That means a balance of the notes…more sound from the bass or the lead, etc.
Give it a try. Ask to sing a tag with them. It gives you a feel for the technique and is short version of a song
